Jazz: Greg Sterland Quartet

Greg Sterland – tenor sax, Tim Funnell – piano, Pasquale Votino – bass, Paolo Adamo – drums

Saxophonist Greg Sterland is a graduate of the Royal Welsh College and has played at the club several times before both as a band leader and as part of the Jonny Bruce Organ Quartet. He cites a wide range of influences including Lester Young, Lars Gullin, Warne Marsh and Joe Lovano and is renowned for his adventurous but melodic style of improvisation. Tonight the quartet will mainly be performing Greg’s original compositions.

Pianist Tim Funnell studied jazz at Groningen in the Netherlands and also spent some time in Paris, benefitting from lessons from visiting New York tutors such as Robin Eubanks, Alex Sipiagin and Mike Le Donne. Be-Bop regulars will remember Tim doing a great job accompanying guest saxophonist Simon Spillett at some break-neck tempos.

Bassist Pasquale Votino is originally from Italy where he obtained a classic diploma in double bass at Conservatorio Nicola Sala in Benevento, and also from Italy we have drummer Paolo Adamo, both now firmly established in Bristol’s jazz scene.
