Dave Jones Quintet Play The Music Of Kenny Garrett
September 8, 2022 @ 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm
From £10Pianist Dave Jones has long been a fan of the music of the great saxophonist/composer Kenny Garrett, particularly since hearing him on his late 1990s ‘Songbook’ album and live in London. That album featured Dave’s favourite pianist Kenny Kirkland, and so began the process of discovering Garrett’s other music, both older and newer. Now in 2022, it turns out that Andy Hague (drummer in Dave’s Quartet) has a great set of charts for a wide selection of Garrett’s tunes, including November 15 and Brother Hubbard from ‘Songbook’, and some favourite tunes from other albums including Boogety Boogety, Chief Blackwater, Native Tongue, and A Hole in One.
Saxophonist Ben Waghorn is one of Bristol’s finest players with a national reputation, but was sadly absent from our last season’s programme due to a conflicting regular commitment – so we’re really pleased that we have managed to find a gap in his schedule, and this may well turn out to be your only chance to hear him at the club this season.
Trumpeter Andy Hague is well known as leader of his own quintet, Double Standards quartet and Horace Silver tribute Silverado. He also frequently appears at the club on drums.
Pianist Dave Jones has released numerous critically acclaimed jazz albums, performed internationally, and has TV composition credits including ‘The Big Bang Theory’, the US Open Golf Tournament, ‘The Today Show’, and ‘Location, Location, Location’.
Bassist Chris Jones can be heard around Bristol with Orphic and We Are Leif, and young drummer Ryan Thrupp has just recently graduated with a First from the Royal Welsh College jazz degree course.
Dave Jones – piano, Andy Hague – trumpet, Ben Waghorn – tenor sax, Chris Jones – bass, Ryan Thrupp – drums
